Politricks

January 17, 2003

So elections are coming up around these parts. And I have no intention of voting. Call me apathetic, if you want, I won't be offended.

See, I believe that a lot of the politics here is driven by personalities and people's desire for power. It's not about the constituents or about the grassroots, it's not about ideology or principles, it's not about providing adequate representation, it's not about agendas or action or anything like that. For the most part, it's about people who want to be "big-up", it's about personality and charisma, it's about who knows who and who has connections, and more than all of that it's about people who are interested in status and money and recognition and their own personal aggrandizement. And I really don't, and can't, respect that. And until a candidate comes along in my constituency (which has probably changed since I've moved) who makes me believe that she or he is about something other than their own self interest and self-promotion, I'm not voting.

The political situation is weird here right now anyway, because there's no effective opposition to speak of. So even if people are unhappy about certain aspects of the way the Government is running the country, they really don't have an alternative to turn to, because the opposition party is in shambles. We're practically a one-party state the way things are right now. The good thing is that we're not as bad as Jamaica -- our politicians have fortunately not yet resorted to distributing guns and throwing ballot boxes in rivers to win elections.
